Radar

http://www.wsaz.com/blogs/askjosh/45980227.html

This picture is of a doppler radar map of a storm cell that produced a tornado.  This "hook" shape is a warning sign that a tornado will develop.  Radars emit a bursts of energy, and if it strikes an object like rain, snow, or hail the energy is scattered in all directions and a small fraction is scattered back to the radar. The reflected signal is analyzed by computers for the strength of the returned pulse.
